Talks & Presentations
Gwen Moore welcomes invitations to speak to professional, civic, academic, and religious groups about her experiences in China. Each talk includes many slides that introduce the audience to the exquisite beauty of China’s countryside and the expressiveness of her people.
The three most requested talks are:
- Two Chinas: Urban/Modern—Rural/Ancient
This talk highlights the stark contrast between the urban picture of China we saw during the 2008 Olympics and what one sees in rural China. In the presentation, we travel—in pictures and words—from the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing, down China’s urban east coast to the extraordinarily prosperous cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen. From there, we head into rural China, the China that I have come to know through my travels—and the China where two-thirds of the country’s 1.3 billion people live much like their ancestors did.
- China Backcountry: China's Economic and Educational Contrasts
This talk draws on Moore's personal experience in China of helping very poor children in a remote, mountainous area of China to go to school. The talk sketches the blunt contrast between the growing economic health on China’s coast and the stark poverty that remains throughout much of the country’s heartland.
- Pulling Out the Arrow
This talk weaves the story of the children Moore calls "hers" with the underlying question of our personal choices related to giving and helping others. Why do we sometimes feel called to act and not other times? It also touches on a philosophy that keeps the giver directly connected to the gifts they give.
